The father-daughter relationship in Soderbergh's HAYWIRE.

2020.08.28 15:16 thegeorgianwelshman The father-daughter relationship in Soderbergh's HAYWIRE.

Rewatching HAYWIRE---love all Soderbergh but I especially love his action flicks with powerful female protagonists (see also OUT OF SIGHT)---and I was moved nearly to tears by the scene in the middle of act II where Gina Carano has been betrayed by her partner and her boss and is on the run. She calls her father and says, "Things are screwed up here and I need to come home. It may take a couple of days depending on what happens."
And Dad (Bill Paxton) says, "Don't worry about me. You just get here as quick as you can."
And I nearly let out a sob because of how jealous I am that anyone could have a home like this, a place they know for sure they can go to when they are in trouble and they will comforted and succored and protected. Just like that. Without any doubt.
In trouble?
Call Dad.
Go home.
It's like this in any movie with strong parent-child relationships but this one hit me really hard for some reason.

2019.08.21 03:17 xxJAMZZxx The first time MMA fighters were mentioned in /r/MMA

I saw this on /soccer so I figured I'd try it here.
Current UFC Champs:
Jessica Andrade
I find this one the most humorous. Tallest vs shortest and yes shortest including the women. The shortest women are 5'3" and that is Rosi Sexton and Jessica Andrade while Lineker is 5'2". (I guess this is just talking about height idk)
Looks pretty good, Mighty Mouse/Moraga, MacDonald/Ellenberger, LawleBahadurzada, Julie Kedzie put on one of the best fights last year with Miesha Tate, and so far there hasn't been a bad WMMA fight in the UFC, so I'm sure Carmouche/Andrade will be great.
Valentina Shevchenko
Can someone explain the Liz Carmouche fight that she won by 'retirement'? It was against Valentina Shevchenko. - An early thread on Shevchenko, calling her the future of the BW division.
Amanda Nunes
Info on female MMA fighters Zoila Frausto, Karina Hallinan, Amanda Nunes, Julia Budd, Marloes Coenen and Miesha Tate. Zoila Frausto taking on Karina Hallinan at the Bellator Fighting Championships 35 on March 5th in Lemoore, California, Marloes “Rumina” Coenen talking on Miesha “Takedown” Tate at Strikeforce: Columbus on the same night, March 5th and the results of Amanda Nunes debut in Strikeforce against Julia Budd. - A thread on a supposed fight between Nunes and Carano that never happened.
Henry Cejudo
Henry Cejudo, the youngest person to ever win a gold in wrestling. Has trained with team alpha male, and is pursuing boxing. (In a thread asking about who people would like to see fight MMA) - A thread about Cejudo's retirement from wrestling.
Max Holloway
Max Holloway had 4 fights and got a 2 fight contract for the UFC.
150x better than Anik? Are you high? Seriously just no. I will agree, the "TUF: Live Finale" wasn't Anik's best showing since he came on board with the UFC...he said some pretty questionable things like trying to ad drama before the decision in the Holloway/Schilling fight was announced, but he is very good. (An Anik v Goldy debate more than a discussion on Max but I thought it was interesting)
Both guys are great strikers with an underdeveloped sub-par ground game. IMO the most promising of the two is Holloway. (On his upcoming fight against Justin Lawrence)
Khabib Nurmagomedov
Lightweight ; Ben Henderson, Edson Barboza , Tony Ferguson, John Makdessi , Paul Sass , Khabib Nurmagomedov* (Response to a thread about good prospects. Some other interesting names listed) - Thread on Khabib being signed to the UFC
Kamaru Usman
David Glover (0-0) vs. Kamaru Usman (0-0) (Welterweight Bout) Round 1: Quick exchange to start off with Glover getting advantage with jab. Takedown by Usman with GnP. Glover back up & it's a stalemate. 2:30 left & Usman forces Glover to cage. Glover w/ td @ 1:50. Usman is smothering Glover. Glover w/ reversal @ 1:20. Stand up now. Clinch battle with Usman getting the best. B&B scores it 10-9 Usman (This is one of my favorites. A guy was basically blogging an RFA event to himself, and it happened to feature the pro debut of Usman. Pedro Munhoz and Mirsad Bektic were also on the card) - A thread on an Usman victory in Legacy.
As far as guys I'd suggest you check out are concerned, I'm not deep enough into the smaller promotions to give you much you wouldn't already know, but I've got a couple guys that I've seen a little of and have heard are names to pay attention to in the future. They're both associated with major names: Kamarudeen Usman and Khalil Rountree. Pretty sure Spider himself called Rountree a major star in the making at some point (Someone suggests Usman and Rountree as future prospects well before anyone knew who they were)
Robert Whittaker
Nothing fishy about it. He got caught off balance and pushed down. That punch Rob landed when he stepped around his guard was monstrous and definitely rung his bell. You can hear Xavier cry out when it lands, it definitely jarred him. That being said I see Brad Scott winning a decision. I really like Rob Whittaker though. I think he's a good guy and this seasons entire cast has bee a bunch of really cool dudes with the exception of Valentino who's a fucking chav. (About Whittaker in TUF)
Always a fan of the guys that are all business. Whittaker seems solid. (Also from TUF) - Early thread on Whittaker being signed to the UFC
Jon Jones
Bonnar vs. Jones - Jones by decision (Jones was already known when this sub was created, a prediction on his fight against Bonnar here)
Bonnar vs. Jones - Jones, not sure how or when (Another prediction)
Stipe Miocic
Miocic is a raw talent and good entry into the HW division, reminds me soo much of young Arlovski. Joe fought well, and provided good contest. (A prediction for his first UFC fight) - Thread about a Cro Cop interview where Stipe is brought up after his UFC debut
I get what you mean though, Randy's my favourite, and it's pretty much true that for UFC it's about the money and not the competition in these cases. I think it depends where your values lie in the sport in terms of what entertains you, seeing the best people fight seems to be the best way to get good fights though. So you don't think Fedor would be able to hang with say that Stipe Miocic guy or maybe Meathead even. I think he's still competitive enough to be fighting someone better than freaking Jeff Monson! (Shortly after Stipe's UFC debut, has more to do with Fedor than Stipe)
Some other fighters who aren't champs but I thought would be interesting. I have more but I don't want to make this post longer than it's already gonna be, if there's anyone I don't show here that you want to see let me know:
Conor McGregor - This might be my favorite. A video on Cathal Pendred (lol) getting ready for a Cage Warriors fight from seven years ago, in it he spars with Conor. Less than 10,000 views on the video.
conor mcgregor, patrick holohan, neil seery (Reply to someone asking about up and coming Irish fighters)
Daniel Cormier - A random Helwani video with King Mo from before DC was known in the MMA circuit.
That Brookins guy looks like a caveman and is one weird fuckin dude. I knew he must be a very good grappler if he was tossing around Daniel Cormier like he was. (Comment from TUF, DC must have been there as a coach)
There are still plenty of good match ups with talent outside of the UFC. I def would love to see Fedor and Overeem face off with Lesnar or any of the other top ranked heavyweights in the UFC. Brock vs. Cormier would be a good match up. I wish Cole Konrad wasn't his training partner because that fight could be one to watch in a year or two. And just in general I'd like to see Josh Barnett back in the UFC for one last stretch. (Interesting old comment that somewhat ironically mentions DC vs Brock)
Israel Adesanya
Glory also have the young star Israel Adesanya under contract, who is also a #2 world ranked WMC MuayThai fighter, a pro boxer and pro MMA fighter. He's currently the full time MuayThai sparring partner for the UFC's Anthony "Rumble" Johnson and is one of the MMA guys at Blackzillions being trained by Rashad Evans. He would be an awesome addition to the card in an MMA bout. (This comment also mentions Cosmo Alexandre, interestingly enough)
Israel Adesanya from N.Z (Someone with a War Hooker flair saying Adesanya would be good if he ever came to the UFC)
Ben Askren - Thread on Askren signing with Bellator, nothing in it.
Its amazing how much up and coming talent they have this season--including guys like Ben Askren, Joe Warren, all season 1 champs, Huerta, and heavyweight Cole Konrad. There are a lot of names that have the potential to be legit stars in MMA over the next few years. (On the Bellator tournaments that were happening with Askren)
Colby Covington - Thread on a CFA event that included Colby. - Article on Colby getting ready to join the UFC. Mentions him being Jones' teammate in JUCO. - Link to an article on Colby's UFC debut. Guy who posted it claimed to be Colby's high school teammate.
Francis Ngannou - Thread on Ngannou being signed to the UFC. A guy in the comments claimed to have rolled no gi with him previously. - Thread predicting the results of Ngannou's debut card.
Cody Garbrandt - Another really good one. A guy has a video about a controversy at a local fight. The video is now gone but based on replies you can see that this fight was Garbrandt's pro debut. - Same guy who posted the last thread posts a picture of himself with Urijah Faber while they were at an NAAFS event that Garbrandt was in.
Justin Gaethje - A really early article on Gaethje, apparently he used to chew gum in every fight.
Start small and build stars instead or relying on falling ones if you want to be around next year. Moraes, Gaethje and Spong. Not Burkman, Branch and Simpson. If anything you should be using old names like this to prop up your young guys (ex. when Moraes beat Torres and became a name overnight). (Comment about WSOF)
Haha well never said anything about the kicks, he didn't check any. The only punch that hurt him was the strike at the end that nearly ko'd him. He didn't expect it so he didn't roll.. otherwise he does that very well, especially against a guy with a crap ton of power like Gaethje. If Justin polishes his game and stops doing stupid things he will be a force, scary strikes (More WSOF)
Alex Volkanovski
AFC - is a Melbourne based promotion, they have AFC 5 on may 10th: BruteForce is a Melbourne promotion as well, next event is on May 17th: (Comment with an article about Volkanovski's one loss in his career. Article is deleted)
Look forward to Hulk Volkanovski fighting, fuck yeah straya!
Jorge Masvidal
7 Jorge Masvidal vs. Ryan Healy 19:28 05/25/2008
regardless, bellator has been awesome. one of my favorite orgs right now. any time you get to see alvarez or masvidal in action is a good thing. - Video of Masvidal losing to Toby Amada in Bellator. If he wouldve won he'd have fought Eddie Alvarez in the final.
Once again if you have any other requests let me know. The non champs I posted were the ones I found the most interesting.

2019.04.03 14:35 JediPaxis Leaked Details About The Mandalorian: Characters, Locations, Aliens and More...

With Celebration Chicago beginning in just a matter of days, now is the time to get in those last few leaks before official news reveals and hopefully confirmations of what we've already learned. In that spirit, here are several previously unknown things about The Mandalorian that I have been told by one of my reliable sources:

This is the sum total of what I know about The Mandalorian. Everything I have at this point in time is represented here and it's certainly enough to get me interested and excited for what this project will be. Hopefully we'll know a lot more about this show shortly.

2017.08.02 23:55 steveleexmaslights [discussion] How can UFC / MMA get bigger? WME and other promotions roles

Despite what is obviously a down year for the UFC without Ronda or Conor or even a single PPV that has done more than 500k buys up to most likely the Jones/Cormier rematch many fans were looking at this like WME-IMG are fucking up and miscalculated the market for MMA.
However, we learned recently that WME received another investment of 1.1 Billion that would allow them to buy out more if not all minority partners from the Zuffa purchase.
I, like many of you, don't know shit about the behind the scenes or have any experience closing or being involved in any deal with even 1/100th of this WME / Zuffa transacation. However I still remain optimistic because of 1) I just don't think a group of people that can even gather up a 4 billion can make such a collasal miscalculation and only a year or even two years they're like fuck this and
2) the only thing we as fans can point to definitively regarding this down year is that it always happened. The circulation of stars and the rise of new ones in a nearly organic way. The Chuck/Tito rivalry and first 1 million PPV buy card UFC 66. The next was GSP and even BJ Penn as the first star for the lighter divisions. Brock Lesnar fell into the UFCs lap just cause he wanted to try this MMA thing.
Strikeforce put Ronda in a main event and believed in women's MMA before UFC. UFC realized what they were missing out on and capitalized 10 fold. And of course there is the meteoric rise of Conor McGregor.
The biggest stars in UFC had the necessary push but they also had this innate ability to self promote and make their fights matter. Elite XC had two of the biggest stars at the time with Kimbo Slice and Gina Carano being exposed to the masses on network television in USA with CBS.
You can't force this issue. No amount of promotion will make DJ or Joanna etc into a must see attraction. That's on them to get to this lofty 1 million mark (Amanda Nunes back to back 1mil joke).
So I think WME success is gonna be a long term thing. 5 years maybe even 10 years. Some things I hope to see one day:
What's one of the most exciting things about other sports? Seeing these up and coming top prospects in the NCAA/equivalent. How can the UFC achieve this?
Perhaps by uniting multiple leagues and creating some sort of tournament among less promotions as if they were NCAA teams. The winners and impressive fighters are given fighter contracts and have a hyped UFC debut. You create a further emotional investment before they're even in the UFC.
Because right now their are too many fighters and promotions to watch. Unless you are a hardcore fan that really understands MMA, it's easy to just call someone a can crusher or who cares he's doing this outside of the UFC. I think this would be a good way to create that yearly hype that comes with Drafts, #1 overall pick, top 10 1st round picks etc.
Creating a developmental league that is directly and officially under the UFC would be huge for me. Imagine being the fan that was already watching Conor's fights in Cage Warrior. That emotional investment would be building before he even set foot in the UFC. Or if Ronda's pre-UFC fights all had this assumption that wow Olympic judo bronze medalist prospect, can't wait to we see her in the UFC.
It gives fighters a clear path as to how to make it to the UFC like there is a clear path of how to make it to the other pro sports.

the next level for the UFC is creating this hierarchy

Creating a clear path so fighters and people can see MMA as an attainable goal that pays well.
This is what I think is the most significant thing UFC/WME can do. Create this internal infrastructure in addition to the traditional ways of buying fighters from leagues outside UFC jurisdiction.
I'm sure there's a lot more stuff. Every sport has experimented with changes from the norm. World soccer made it so the goalie couldn't pick up the ball from a back pass. Hockey added shootouts and way more penalties. Baseball lowered the pitching mound. Eddie Bravo is the one that made this point. He said every sport changed the rules to try to increase offense cause that's what is exciting.
Why can't MMA/UFC do that? Yes, they have government in the way in USA/Can, but they were in the way of New York and they finally made that happen. Japan letting fighters wear whatever the fuck they want made things more exciting. Wearing gi pants makes Eddie's lockdown system much more effective which means more offense. It just plain looks cool or at least different.
Create more variety since they can. Maybe try using a ring in the future or different rule sets. Some might be against this but I know a lot of people and myself that's one of the reasons I like watching Rizin or One. It's different. It's not the same UFC look and product even if the fighters are inferior. It's fun. It's enjoyable.
That's some stuff I also hope for. More leniency. UFC seems to be in this protocol way of doing business. But say for the upcoming UFC Japan event if they brought back on this Pride nostalgia somehow I think that would be a big hit with fans new and old. Just make things different shake it up, but still keeping its core methods.
I don't know it's fun to imagine and think about. These are some ways I think MMA and UFC can get bigger cause I think the bigger the UFC gets and the more money they can pay the fighters the better. NBA NHL NFL etc we already know having all the best players/fighters in one league is the best way to go. Soccer isn't like this but they don't need to be cause it's so fucking big with so many tournaments and World Cup euro cup Champions League etc.
What do you guys think?

2016.07.23 19:44 Blee10 Former WWE writer John Piermarini gives a rundown of Money in the Bank 2010 and it's booking decisions

It's a long read but I find it very interesting, especially the part about wanting The Usos to be different. Unfortunately he had to take down the article itself from his site but I was lucky to find the article in the comments of the old Reddit thread it's from.
John Piermarini worked as a writer for the WWE from early 2009 - late 2010. During John's time on the creative team he worked on the RAW writing team. Since leaving WWE John has created and has given a behind the curtain feel to his articles that range from television recaps to the inner working of WWE storylines. Check out for daily insight in the current and past WWE product. You can also follow him on Twitter at @JohnAsHimself for more of his opinions.
What is Story Recall? Each week I will write a column recalling either an episode of RAW, Smackdown, ECW, NXT, a Pay-Per-View or storyline while giving running commentary and a never before seen behind the scene account of the event or storyline. Did the show or story play out the way it was originally planned? It’s all revealed here.
Money in the Bank - July 18, 2010
I will go on record and say that this is ONE themed Pay-Per-View that I actually think works. As much as I enjoy Hell in a Cell matches or TLC matches I prefer them as blow off stipulations to stories as opposed to a stipulation to a match simply because that is the theme of the PPV that month.
Segment One: Big Show vs. Kane vs. Kofi Kingston vs. Christian vs. Matt Hardy vs. Drew McIntyre vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Cody Rhodes – Smackdown Money in the Bank Ladder Match
• We start off the show with the three-man booth. Jerry Lawler is not a big fan of Matt Striker and it shows at certain times during these three man booths.
• Kofi Kingston was originally set to defend his Intercontinental Title at the PPV against Cody Rhodes but both were added to the match so that it had the biggest star power possible from Smackdown. If my memory serves me right the two Superstars they replaced were Luke Gallows and… hmm well the other escapes me at the moment.
• As much as it seems Christian turns into the fan favorite choice to win Money in the Bank Match each year it’s not going to happen. Christian is seen as a good hand that can help some of the younger talent and does not have a lot of support from higher ups to be a Main Event guy. Edge vs. Christian as a Main Event program has been pitched to death and rejected every time.
• Cody Rhodes was actually a heavy favorite amongst the Smackdown writers to win the briefcase.
• Before Christian was injured a story was being developed to turn Christian heel and work a program with Matt Hardy. The seeds were being dropped on Smackdown at the time Christian was injured.
• Drew McIntyre. Walking into the arena that day Drew McIntyre was set to win the Money in the Bank briefcase. But Drew wasn’t the Superstar who was originally set to win. That was Kane, but was changed later after Kevin Dunn agreed with my philosophy that it would benefit a younger guy to carry that briefcase for a while. So it was set one week before the Pay-Per-View, Drew was to win Money in the Bank. While in the production meeting hours before the show a case was made to have Kane win the briefcase and cash in that night. The thought process? Sheamus was retaining the WWE Title; Miz was winning the RAW Money in the Bank (more on this later) and certain people felt like the average fan would have the feeling too many heels won. Keep in mind Kane would turn heel by defeating one of the most popular WWE Superstars in WWE by cashing in. None the less, the feeling was that this was the first ever Money in the Bank PPV and something needed to happen to brand this PPV as “anything can happen.” I gave the argument that the current storyline had Kane wanting to capture the holy grail for his brother and by doing so tonight took away any future story you had with Kane trying to take it off a someone who may have “took out” Undertaker. I added Kane should challenge Mysterio at Summerslam and go over there.
• Michael Cole, “For the first time Kane enters into the Money in the Ladder Match arena.”
• I pitched Drew McIntyre a story that would kick off after Money in the Bank in which he would be the Superstar to have taken out Undertaker… with some help. I will write a column on this in a future “Story Recall: Who Took Out the Undertaker?”
• Big Show breaking the ladder with his foot and chopping another step off was a great spot for Big Show and needs to be done more often to help establish Big Show as a GIANT.
• I will get into this more during the RAW Money in the Bank Ladder Match but I was in the minority, let me take that back, I was the only one opposed to the original Money in the Bank winners during our creative team meetings. Others may have agreed with me but no one spoke up.
• Michael Hayes, Pat Patterson and Jamie Noble did an amazing job putting this match together!
• Cody Rhodes needs his own iPhone app: “How to be Dashing” giving tips, motivating sound bites by Cody and include a virtual mirror. I will enjoy Cody Rhodes success as I was told multiple times when writing Cody Rhodes promos, that I just need to say what I would say because I was “Dashing” Cody Rhodes. I don’t think it was meant as a compliment but I made it one!
• Kofi Kingston’s Boom Drop off the top of the ladder will live forever!
• At one point Kane vs. Big Show for the World Heavyweight Title was considered for WrestleMania 27.
• The giant ladder was a legitimate giant pain. It was hard to get in the ring and had to be rehearsed before the show to ensure Big Show wouldn’t cut the ring apron when bringing it in.
• Mike Rotunda, the producer of the RAW Money in the Bank Ladder Match was upset that producers utilized the mini ladder in this match as he had a spot for it in the RAW match.
• Kofi Kingston had a star making performance in this match, and for the second time in his career it was not capitalized on.
• Big Show being buried in a pile of ladders was great!
• I am watching this for the very first time in its entirety and Dolph Ziggler narrowly escaped injury when Kane threw him over the top rope and Dolph got his ankle stuck in the ropes. Wow.
• I know Kane winning was unexpected but Kane didn’t need to win the briefcase. Kane is bigger than the briefcase and when you have opportunities like this to “make someone” by simply having them win a match (Money in the Bank, Royal Rumble, etc) I think you need to capitalize on it. It’s tough getting guys over these days and these are free passes that need to be utilized.
• Who were you hoping would win the Smackdown Money in the Bank briefcase? Let everyone know in the comments section.
Sheamus Backstage Interview:
• The "great white shark” line is a perfect example of trying to appease Vince McMahon who enjoys animal kingdom references. We have all been guilty of it.
Segment Two: Eve vs. Divas Champion Alicia Fox – Divas Championship Match
• It’s small, but I HAAAATE when the Divas do their pose at the top of the ramp. Ok wait maybe I don’t but I hate when there is more than one girl on stage and they both do it. LayCool’s routine doesn’t count.
• I would have enjoyed a lengthy Title reign by Eve as Divas Champion because I think Eve could have brought a lot of legitimacy to the division because of her Jiu-Jitsu background. Unfortunately Eve lost the Title because we wanted to brand Fatal Four Way by having fans feel the Title is at jeopardy in a Fatal Four Way Match. I believe we proved that by having every single Title change hands in a Fatal Four Way Match that night.
• Eve looks like a super hero. Its rare you can find a Diva that can seem larger than life and WWE has that in Eve but fails to capitalize on that. I enjoyed sitting with Eve and hearing her ideas for stories. I wish more of them were used.
Segment Three: Hart Dynasty (w/ Natalya) vs. The Usos (w/ Tamina)
• Usos fell victim to bad timing. Usos seemed to be on a roll when we debuted them. I was proud of the promo The Usos and I wrote for their debut. Unfortunately two things happened. Nexus debuted shortly after and Vince didn’t understand the hip-hop culture thus didn’t get the appeal of the Usos. I think he was wrong. My wife doesn’t watch wrestling, but she found the Usos entertaining. That should say something.
• I’d like to see the Usos get a little personality. There is nothing wrong with adding a little “Rikishi” to their characters.
• When the Usos debuted they almost became babyfaces. The idea was to debut Usos as heels but slowly show Hart Dynasty with heelish tendencies slowly swapping what team played what role. The idea was scrapped shortly after.
• The original idea behind the Usos was to present them as the opposite of what you would expect out of a Samoan Superstar. Educated, Intelligent and actual wear boots. Usos would essentially have been the Russell Simmons of the WWE. That preppy hip-hop style. I think the characters had some real legs.
• One thing I don’t get, and it’s still used with Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov is why the smaller wrestlers are used for the hot tag? I always felt like the smaller guy on the team should be the one working majority of the match and letting the heels dominant finally making the hot tag to the much bigger much fresher partner. I could be in the minority with that though.
• There was a quick conversation about having Usos go over and win the Tag Team Titles here. When writing the rough draft of the show, I actually pitched having Usos go over. The talks went nowhere and Hart Dynasty retained.
Segment Four: World Champion Rey Mysterio vs. Jack Swagger – World Championship Match
• It was made very clear that while Rey Mysterio was Champion he was not to be referred to as the World HEAVYWEIGHT Champion. Simply just the World Champion.
• One request I had and asked of Brian Gewirtz was to let me take over the Jack Swagger character as I felt I could make him a Main Event character. So while he spent a lot of time on RAW losing to guys like Santino Marella and Primo I wanted to present Swagger as an entertaining heel who you could make fun of but you knew when he was in the ring he was legitimate.
• One thing I felt proud of when I started working with Swagger was hearing Vince McMahon over head set saying we were watching Swagger become a star before our eyes during one of my Swagger promos. I can only take so much credit though because Swagger really made this character his own. Once Swagger won the World Title and was on his way I wanted to do the same with Ted Dibiase. It’s really sad what they having DiBiase doing now.
• Fun Fact: My original pitch for Jack Swagger as World Heavyweight Champion was to have a series of matches with Undertaker beginning at Summerslam and have Swagger defeat Undertaker clean twice in a row. Undertaker can make someone a star and I think WWE is missing out on that.
• WWE really missed out on not capitalizing on the All American American, playing the heel none to less vs. the Mexican Hero. There was so much we could have done. This was one of the many issues why I left. The fact that we don’t make the most with our stories and create the most compelling and entertaining stories possible.
• I don’t think the whole “Eddie Guerrero boot” trick came off as well as they hoped. When you have to convince your audience that it happened it doesn’t work.
• Kane coming out and attacking Swagger was a brilliant swerve because no one could guess what was coming next As much as I respect Kane and enjoyed working with him I still feel like this was not the best thing to do with the Money in the Bank briefcase. Kane really turned his career around and added new life into the character as Champion but he didn’t need the briefcase to do it.
Edge – Jericho Backstage:
• Do I think Chris Jericho is returning at the Royal Rumble? Next week I will post my Royal Rumble predictions and you can see if I think Jericho returns.
Segment Five: WWE Women’s Champion Layla (w/ Michelle McCool) vs. Kelly Kelly (w/ Tiffany) – WWE Women’s Championship Match
• Fun Fact #2: Vince McMahon appointed me the exclusive writer for LayCool. Not because she got that special privilege but because we asked for it. Let me take this time to say Michelle McCool gets zero favors because she is married to Undertaker. Michelle McCool accomplished everything she got because she was the best. If you need to blame someone you need to blame me because I was the one who would push hard for anything Michelle got on TV. Michelle could wrestle and Michelle could talk, a lot of MALE Superstars can’t do that and Michelle would have been successful with or without Undertaker. There were a lot of people who wanted to see Michelle fail and she fought that the entire time I was there. There were a ton of entertaining ideas we had for LayCool and other Divas on the roster that never saw the light of day.
• Kelly Kelly can help bring a lot of viewers to WWE. She needs to be presented in a way to accomplish that. Gina Carano brought a ton of fans to female MMA and Kelly Kelly can do the same. It’s a shame they don’t focus more on her.
Segment Six: Randy Orton vs. John Morrison vs. Evan Bourne vs. Mark Henry vs. Edge vs. Chris Jericho vs. United States Champion The Miz vs. Ted DiBiase – RAW Money in the Bank Ladder Match
• Randy Orton was originally set to win the Money in the Bank briefcase. I spent many creative team meetings trying to change Brian Gewirtz mind and give the briefcase to Miz.
• I’ve said my piece on giving the briefcase to an unestablished Superstar but I also felt like the original plan for the briefcase was completely absurd. Orton was to win the briefcase and cash it in the following night on RAW losing to Sheamus thanks to interference by NEXUS. The big problem, was Orton wasn’t even set to have a story with NEXUS after that so essentially we were wasting what the briefcase does for someone.
• I told everyone who would listen. We won’t see another Rock anytime soon but Miz will come the closest. I really believed Miz has what it takes to be a huge star. For a while I was laughed at for that, and some may still laugh now but Miz is slowly proving me right.
• Fun Fact #3: I was hired based on a writing sample involving Ted Dibiase winning Money in the Bank at WrestleMania 25 and cashing it in on Randy Orton later that night. The story involved DiBiase never forgetting Orton punting him in the skull. If I can find that story I will post it in a future article.
• Back to Orton winning the briefcase… So I tried my hardest in creative team meetings to get Miz over but it just was going nowhere. Finally a week before the PPV the subject was brought up that there was a pitch to have Miz go over and surprisingly Kevin Dunn agreed and when Kevin Dunn likes something so does Vince so my fight wasn’t in vein and now Miz is your current WWE Champion. I am sure some of you hate me for it. You're welcome!
• Maryse climbing the ladder and DiBiase running up the ladder due to her distraction was a very entertaining spot.
• The things Morrison is capable of doing is unreal. Why he has not ascended to the top of the WWE ranks is beyond me. I’d like to think I had a hand in kick starting his current push before I left FINALLY incorporating his parkour style into his character and getting him more involved in the show. I hope Morrison does the most with his opportunity.
• There comes a point when people will realize Mark Henry’s role and it will soon become ineffective, if it hasn’t already.
• Mark Henry’s strength is UNREAL and has a place in the WWE and can really be utilized it’s just not in the way they are doing it.
• Once again great job by Mike Rotunda and Dave Finlay putting this match together.
• The RKO on Morrison into the Evan Bourne splash on Orton was awesome.
• The reaction Orton got when climbing the ladder only makes Miz winning that much more effective.
• What are your thoughts on Miz winning the RAW Money in the Bank briefcase? Leave your comments.
• Vince absolutely hated the promo I wrote for Miz after winning Money in the Bank. I stuck to my guns and told Vince it would work and felt confident about it because Miz felt confident about it. Vince reluctantly agreed to keep the promo as is and after Miz cut his promo he looked at me and gave me a thumbs up. I felt like Miz needed to give a promo 6 years in the making and felt this one was it. Miz executed this promo PERFECTLY. I couldn’t find a video of it anywhere otherwise I would put it up for you (anyone have it?).
• I am extremely proud of Miz and how he proved everyone wrong, including myself, and I am glad I could play a small hand it helping he do that.
• I had a story mapped out all the way to WrestleMania for Miz that I will post on the website as we get closer to WrestleMania.
Segment Seven: John Cena vs. WWE Champion Sheamus – WWE Championship Match
• There is a lot to talk about when it comes to the NEXUS story, which I will get to at a later time. I do not want to reveal any future plans.
• During the John Cena – Sheamus - NEXUS package that aired before the match they showed Cena and Sheamus holding the ring with steel chairs. I made it pretty clear in the production meeting that I was opposed to them working as a unit so close to their Steel Cage Match. Vince liked the visual of the both of them running off NEXUS and I suggested doing that but having Sheamus then clock Cena with the chair helping to build some anticipation for this match. Instead I felt like we had two allies going to war against each other with the enemy not even involved in the match.
• WWE needs a new cage. At one point we had one being made and I believe it got too expensive. The cage doesn’t fit the rest of the high production value of the WWE. TNA’s cage is cooler than WWE’s. Sheamus winning the WWE Title is a whole other column to itself. Interesting story there.
• There was a feeling that Sheamus wasn’t getting over as a heel as much as he should have. I would argue that the reason behind that was that he never beat anyone. When he won the WWE Title it was promoted as a fluke, even during this match commentators were saying it was a fluke. At Fatal Four Way Sheamus slithered into the ring and pinned John Cena who was attacked by NEXUS. So essentially Sheamus never beat Cena convincingly and probably was not viewed by the audiences an actual threat to the top babyfaces.
• I think Sheamus needed to beat Triple H at WrestleMania and take Triple H out there. Really sends a message that you can destroy an icon at WrestleMania then take him out just because you wanted to. That’s making an impact and that is something that sticks in the minds of the fans.
• Michael Tarver is a badass. He looks the part, which is hard to find these days.
• Very good finish to the match.

2016.05.29 01:15 suchapain The Sarkeesian Sexism in Uncharted 4 - Liana K.

Liana recently wrote an article about Uncharted 4 where she explains why she thinks that tester who was fired was correct to be unhappy with Nadine. Liana identifies and names a couple of new tropes in U4 that she thinks is harmful.
The very thing that creates weaknesses in Nadine as a character was the Sarkeesian-inspired thing Druckmann is patting himself on the back for: changing male characters into female ones “to be different” instead of creating female characters from the outset.
With Superwoman Syndrome comes a tightening of the beauty myth. Gina Carano smashed it in Deadpool because she was physically large, but still beautiful and desirable. But she’s an exception that proves the larger rule that in most media, women look like models no matter what they’re supposed to be playing. Cops look like models. Firefighters look like models. Doctors look like models. So real life female cops don’t tend to look like the ones you see on TV, while real life male cops do. That becomes a PR problem for real life first responders.
The social impact goes deeper than that, however. The body type that keeps getting replicated is decidedly and profoundly white. The b-to-c-cup breasts, boyish hips, and the lean muscle; the slightly freckled skin and “modest” Western dress that are the hallmarks of Sarkeesian-brand false-feminist character design… this rigid standard marginalizes the beauty paradigms of other cultures. Latina and Black women have to reclaim their fuller hips and “Oakland booties” to get around accusations that their natural bodies are fat or obscene. The fear of naked female bodies is colonial thinking.
All Sarkeesian’s followers have done is swap one set of racist, sexist ideals for another, instead of actually reducing racism and sexism. They’ve just created another trope: The Sarkeesian. It’s no less sexist to force a woman to conform to the Sarkeesian — a woman who is the embodiment of “strong” until the point that strength might threaten or offend — than, say, a Ms Male Character.
These sorts of on-screen marriages are a sexist trope that gets replicated to falsely portray women as superior people in inferior positions. Since we have to give cutesy names to all these tropes now, let’s call it “Wifey McAwesomesauce”. Wifey McAwesomesauce is also seen in numerous sitcoms, in which no one can quite figure out why a mature, competent woman is married to Schlubby McScrewup. Wifey McAwesomesauce has a great job, great clothes, great hair, and raised great kids. Schlubby McScrewup is a misandrist stereotype who can’t change a diaper, make a school lunch, or drop the kids off without “hilarious” calamity. And yet the show is always about Schlubby McScrewup because no one actually cares what’s going on in Wifey McAwesome’s mind. Her perfect perfectness of perfection is only there to validate the comic struggles of her schlub husband. It’s a rare sitcom, like All In The Family, Roseanne, and Blackish, where the spouses actually seem believably matched. In these sitcoms, both partners screw up, and they actually yell at each other. Like, really yell. The way people do in real life. The way Elena didn’t yell at Nate.
I’m not saying Naughty Dog should change any of this. It’s a particular brand of escapist male fantasy, and that’s fine, since the tradition in which the games exist is soaking in that stuff. But Naughty Dog doesn’t get to play in that sandbox and also collect “Great Male Feminist” points. Elena may put on a few non-perfect post-baby pounds if they keep trying to have their cake and eat it too.
Optional Discussion Questions:
What do you agree with or disagree with in this article and why?
Was weakness in Nadine's character created by changing a male character to a female one to be different?
Is Nadine an example of the 'Superwoman Syndrome' trope, that implies women should be perfect at everything?
Did Gina Carano in deadpool successfully avoid that trope by being physically large? If Nadine was larger, would she then be fine and not harmful?
Does the superwoman syndrome trope appearing in media make the world a worse place for women in the way the article says? ( The ongoing attempts to be perfect at everything wear women down and make them physically and mentally sick. In media women look like models no matter what they are playing including cops, firefighter, doctors, creating a PR problem for real first responders. This rigid standard marginalizes the beauty paradigms of other cultures.)
Is it true that "all Sarkeesian’s followers have done is swap one set of racist, sexist ideals for another, instead of actually reducing racism and sexism."?
Is it true that "They’ve just created another trope: The Sarkeesian."? If so, should that really be the name of this trope?
Is Nadine an example of the Sarkeesian trope? What other characters would be an example of this trope?
Is the article correct that 'Ellie in The Last of Us and Angel Dust in Deadpool were embraced, because they are not Sarkeesians. Trishka in Bulletstorm is not a Sarkeesian. They have personalities and say and do deliberately offensive or “unfeminine” things'? Should media avoid using the Sarkeesian trope to make their characters more likeable?
Should Elena have gotten more angry with Nate when she found out he lied to her?
Is it correct to describe their marriage as "They are a manboy married to a Superwoman."?
Is Elena an example of the sexist “Wifey McAwesomesauce” trope that can also be seen in many sitcoms? Is this trope making the world a worse place for women?
Can Naughty Dog not accurately call their game "feminist" for the reasons stated in this article?
Do you think this is a better or worse feminist analysis of this game than feminist frequency's review?

2016.04.27 04:00 Mcheetah2 Fixing the DC Cinematic Universe and Justice League movies

(This is my first time posting on here, but I love movies and storytelling and am glad I found this subreddit. Anyways, bare with me; I'm a newbie.)
I think the whole DC Cinematic Universe should be taking the best of what already works and merging it all together. And I think they should take their time in setting things up, unlike what Warner Bros is doing in real life.
I feel they should begin by combining/tweaking/retconning the Christopher Reeves Superman universe (maybe even picking up from Superman Returns, but possibly with a new actor instead Brandon Routh) with the Nolan universe. And while I am not a huge fan of the Reeves universe (it's too campy), I am only saying this because they should just use what is already established and works with audiences in order save time. These universes can co-exist, but it doesn't mean the movies have to share the same tone. Metropolis can be light-hearted and fun, while Gotham is gritty and realistic. That will make the universe-crossovers more exciting because they are not all the same tone, but will share bits and pieces of each other in the Justice League to all work cohesively. We'll establish that the show Arrow already exists in this world (although I don't like or watch it).
So basically...
Step 1. Make a new Superman movie in 2013. Don't do a reboot; just "update" things a bit, both in story, visuals and all. So it'd be more like a "rebootquel" to Superman Returns. Make Brainiac the villain and introduce Supergirl (Chelan Simmons as Kara Zor-El). Use Henry Cavill or Brandon Routh; I don't care. Keep Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor (just make him more serious). This will be to update Superman into the post-Nolan universe and make it more realistic as the Nolan version of Gotham City (but still as light-hearted as the first two Reeves Superman movies). Hint of Darkseid coming to Earth at the post-credits scene. Basically, this can be summed up with "Make a Superman movie that isn't Zack Synder's 'Man of Steel' and make it FUN!"
Step 2. Make a Wonder Woman movie for 2014 (use anyone but Gal Gadot). Pretty much, do a live-action version of the 2009 animated Wonder Woman, which was pretty much a perfect Wonder Woman movie, as is. In this universe, the animated movie never existed because it's now liVe-action. The movie will be a perfect blend of the Nolan trilogy "realism" with the light-hearted elements of the Superman cinematic universe. So basically, "less realistic than the Batman trilogy, but more fun." Cast 5'10 1/2" Canadian stuntwoman Monique Ganderton as Wonder Woman; she's utterly perfect for the role. Even keep Nathan Fillion in it! The main villain in this movie is Ares the God of War; get Joe Manganiello to play him. Hint at Darkside, off on some far planet, in the post credits scene. Show him for the first time.
Step 3. Debut a television series for The Flash for Fall 2014. It can be the current CW one or a new (and better) one. I don't care. But The Flash they use should be old enough to comfortably fit in with the other actors, not a teenaged character that the CW normally uses. This same actor will play in the movies, bridging the TV and cinematic universes together as well as making the TV series matter a lot more since it will be the fans first introduction into the events of the Justice League movies.
Step 4. Make a Batman and Joker team-up movie for Summer 2015. It can either be this or "Batman and the Suicide Squad." Making a full-out Suicide Squad will be a lot and will interfere in the planned Wonder Woman sequel for 2016, so it could just be The Joker and Harley Quinn. Use Christian Bale as Batman and keep it in the Nolan universe (in this scenario, both Bale and Nolan are fine with making more movies). Debut Robin (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) in this. DON'T use that super-shitty Jared Leto "Juggalo" Joker. Although Heath Ledger dies, this would be the same Joker from The Dark Knight (who they never showed what happened to, in the movie; they never showed him dying or getting locked up). Introduce Harley Quinn in this movie, as well. Keep Margot Robbie as Harley, I guess; I don't care. Have Diana Prince/Wonder Woman cameo in Gotham City at or near the end.
Step 5. Make season 2 of The Flash television series an entire Flashpoint Paradox story arc for Fall 2015, including the alternate Thomas Wayne Batman. This will set him up for the Justice League by season's end.
Step 6. Make a Wonder Woman "Justice League test-run" sequel movie for May 2016 with Wonder Woman as the main protagonist, showing she can hold her own with the big boys. It will be a "Justice League" test-run (just like the Captain America sequels are unofficial Avengers sequels). The plot will be Wonder Woman facing off against an unofficial/mini Injustice League or Legion of Doom and needing Batman and his partner(s) to help her. Make the villains Gorilla Grodd (CGI), Cheetah (Jaime Murray or Lena Headey), possibly Circe (Deborah Ann Woll), and Giganta (Gina Carano with red hair). Maybe add in Solomon Grundy, as well. Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor will cameo as the one financing their whole operation, and he also serves as a way to get Superman involved. The team of villains will be too much for Wonder Woman to do alone, so Batman and Robin will come in to help her. In the third act, Superman will make a surprise entrance (kept a surprise from the internet and never shown in any trailers) and assist them against the bigger villains like Garganta. Once these smaller villains are subdued and Wonder Woman finally gets to work with Batman and Superman (in the third act), we'll end by showing Darkside entering our Solar System, immediately setting up the 2017 Justice League movie.
Step 7. On TV, The Flash and Cyborg will become buddies, as will Green Arrow and Batgirl, then they'll crossover with each other. Season three of the Flash TV show will have him teaming up with Cyborg, while Arrow will debut the character of Barbara Gordon (Karen Gillan) in a plot line. The two hero couples will be setting up their own pre-Justice League alliance. Batgirl will be the glue to allow Arrow, Flash and Cyborg to eventually meet Batman and that will eventually allow them to join the Justice League.
Step 8. The Justice League movie for May 2017! Darkside comes to Earth, fucks up EVERYTHING and only the Justice League can stop them! Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash (TV), Green Arrow (TV), Robin, and the cinematic debuts of Cyborg and Batgirl. Maybe Supergirl would join in, too. We'll leave Aquaman out of this, for now. Wonder Woman and Superman will be working together early on in the film before Darkside's arrival to Earth and Batman and Robin will allow Batgirl to join their team and she will allow Batman and Robin to meet The Flash, his buddy Cyborg, and Green Arrow. So Superman and Wonder Woman's partnership and Batman/Robin/Batgirl/Flash/Cyborg/Green Arrow will merge with them and voilà! Justice League formed in order to stop the Earth-wide threat of Darkseid!
Post Justice League. The heroes will go back to their respective universes and do more movies and TV shows with an established shared universe together. Superman and Supergirl will go back to Metropolis (DC franchise #1), and Batman, Robin, and Batgirl can do their own thing in Gotham City (DC franchise #2) and maybe even potentially set up a Batgirl and/or Nightwing solo TV series (DC franchise #2.5). The Flash will go back to TV (DC franchise #3), as will Green Arrow (DC franchise #4), Wonder Woman will do her third movie for 2018 (DC franchise #5), and Cyborg might spin-off into a Teen Titans movie for 2019 (DC franchise #6).
We've now made a Justice League movie and six other DC franchises in five years without rushing a damn thing or shitting the bed, Zack Snyder style. And we haven't even gotten to Aquaman or Martian Manhunter, yet.

2014.01.02 00:40 oritt Oritt #12 Fast & Furious 6 (2013)

The crew is back together and working with their former advisory, US Diplomatic Security Service Agent Hobbs (The Rock). Working with law enforcement, in exchange for full pardons from their crimes in the previous film, the team pursues a squad of mercenaries who are stealing components for a WMD from military convoys with precision driving skills.
After all going their separate ways after the big score in Fast Five, Brian O'Connor (The late Paul Walker), Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), Tej (Chris "Ludacris" Bridges), Roman (Tyrese), Han (Sung Kang), Gisele (Gal Gadot), Elena (Elsa Pataky) are recruited by Hobbs (Dewayne "The Rock" Johnson) and his new partner (Female MMA star Gina Carano) to stop a group of mercenaries from stealing government technology to build a weapon. The hook and the catch both being that Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), former love interest for Dominic and thought to be dead, is a member of the mercenary group. Car chases and fist fights ensue.
This movie is exactly as advertised. Cars and fights. This iteration of the Fast and Furious franchise features fewer races and less of an emphasis on cars, however, the hand-to-hand fights increased in number and intensity. I think every member of the crew was featured in a fight scene. With the Rock, Vin Diesel, and Carano in the mix the fight scenes were much better than the previous films. This movie was over the top, as you might have guessed from the tank in the trailer, but it is fun. Walker and Diesel's acting made the original a much better film than it ever should have been, but both have grown past the range of acting here, and appeared to phone it. The Rock and Carano also gave lackluster acting performances, but provided a much need upgrade to the fight scenes. After these four, the cast is really too big to let anyone shine. I was hoping to get a good look at Gal Gadot, who was recently announced as the new Wonder Woman in the upcoming Batman v. Superman, but was disappointed by a lack of screen time. (I think she is an inspired choice. As a former model and athletic trainer in the Israel Defense Force, she should be able to hold her own while on screen with a muscle bound Henry Cavill and the rest of the Justice League, which is where DC Comics is moving.)
Rating: 3 Out of 5 Stars. If you are interested in watching this movie after watching the preview, I think you will enjoy it. If you aren't interested after seeing the preview, you probably won't. If you have not seen it already, I do recommend the original Fast and Furious (2001). As I said before, regardless if you are interested in cars and street racing, it was a much better film than it should have been. I would be remiss if I did not mention that Paul Walker died in a car crash while on break from filming the 7th movie in the franchise. He is supposed to be really good in Hours (2013), the last film he completed filming on. The director felt it was going to be a breakout role and finally let him escape the type casting of the Fast & Furious franchise.
