Roswell (1999) is the best WB era show, its ridiculously good.

2020.10.14 07:54 nickmillerwallet Roswell (1999) is the best WB era show, its ridiculously good.

I'm going to caveat this by saying I just finished season 2 (there is one more season to go) but even now I think the opinion holds, I just loved the ending of season 2 so much I had to write about it. So please don't spoil season 3.
Lately, i've been watching shows I missed out on for whatever reason. The WB era in particular. I finished Felicity earlier in the year.
I vaguely knew about Roswell (1999) because of the intro, which I've always liked - i love that Dido song "Here With Me"
I wanted to watch it now as it was the last of the major WB shows I hadn't seen yet. I watched one episode, and I was hooked.
IMO, its the best WB era show by far.
  1. All of the characters feel authentic - even though they still look too old to be high school students - but for that era of show, they sound like regular people. They're not the cliche verbose people who got thesauruses for their birthdays like most shows of that era. Nor are they melodramatic. Its odd that a show about half humans-half aliens would feel the most authentic.
  2. I have a soft spot for Smallville - its still one of my guilty pleasure favorite shows - but Roswell completely outclasses it in terms of an interesting plot involving aliens living on Earth. Smallville always handled that pretty sloppily, but Roswell seems so much more structured and the mythos more intriguing.
  3. The premise of the show is pretty cool and the best story of any WB era show- 4 members of royalty on a far away planet were murdered during a coup and their essence/dna was spliced together with human dna. They were sent to Earth to bide time until they could return and take back power. And they were assigned a protector ........who turns out had other plans. The whole mythos is a fantastic idea.
  4. It has the best romance of any WB era show. I know others got more attention (Joey-Pacey, Felicity's triangle with Ben and Noel, even Clark and Lana/Lois) but the best couple by far IMO is Michael and Maria. Michael reminds me of a grouchier Nick Miller and Maria is just cool and funny. They have a great chemistry that isn't saddled with melodrama. Their banter feels authentic.
  5. The main female lead Liz Parker isn't a doormat like many of the other WB female leads tend to be at times (Joey Potter, Lana Lang, Felicity Porter, etc). Even though when we first meet her, I thought she would be the typical WB lead female - petite , passive, etc. But she takes initiative , doesn't do what she's told, has her own ideas, etc. Best of all, she has conviction. That comes across most in season 2 spoiler
  6. I love how they turn one of the show's antagonists in season 1 (sheriff valenti) into an ally towards the end of season who becomes invaluable in season 2. He's a great actor too, he reminds me of William Dafoe a little bit. I like how the show even calls out how others start to find it suspicious that he spends so much time with the kids. I also like Kyle Valenti - they could've easily made him the dumb school jock who bullies Max, etc. But they made him so much more interesting, having a really funny sense of humor as far as his break up with Liz , turning to Buddhism, etc.
  7. As I said i just finished season 2 and the mind blowing twist compelled me to write this appreciation post. spoiler
The show isn't perfect by any means. There are plenty of continuity errors, like a major development will happen, but the next episode acts as if nothing happened, but then the following episode picks up the story again. It happens twice in season 2 - the christmas episode feels like a weird filler episode that forgot about what just happened when Max was in NYC. The second time was spoiler
spoiler
The major negative, is that Max Evans himself really isn't terribly interesting or fun to root for. But thankfully, while he is the king, the show feels more like an ensemble.
Anyway, i hope season 3 finishes the series strong, but even if it doesn't (i am apprehensive as season 3 was when it went to UPN) - season 1 and 2 are IMO, the best tv from the WB era.
I'd rank the top 3 as :
  1. Roswell
  2. Smallville
  3. Felicity

2020.06.30 07:38 N8_Darksaber1111 Erin Valenti murdered for knowing were in a simulation or something else?

I going to keep this short but I think the widely proposed idea that Erin Valenti was killed for knowing the true nature of reality is a false lead that her murderer wanted us to fallow. I think she was laced with research chemical or analog that wasn't in the labs system and that it had a low upper limit like maoi's do that just a few hits can cause you to od. This would explain her erratic behavior, her cryptic phone call and why she died the way she did. Maybe it wasn't an overdose so much as the trip being to much for her body and mind to handle and thus she her body gave out. (That the right phrase?) Maybe someone was hoping to use it as a date rape on her or because of her involvement with exposing human trafficking it caused her unwanted attention (especially being the ceo of an up and coming tech company) so someone wanted her gone before she became a serious problem. Either of these two make much more sense then the cia killing her when they could have just labeled her a lsd obsessed hippy. Plenty of people are saying were in a matrix, we call it simulation theory, not a real reason to kill a person. What are your thoughts? Apparently I failed at keeping this short, sorry. https://heavy.com/news/2019/10/erin-valenti/

2020.06.03 06:33 Mindcrimeyt An Open Letter to Netmarble Global (Why I am leaving, WARNING: Long)

Dear Netmarble Global Team and Whomever Else it May Concern,
I would like to preface this letter by saying that I have spent approximately $600AUD in this game to date, and was in a top 2% knighthood, challenger for many week in geared elite PVP and the highest rank in normal PVP. I play primarily because I enjoy PVP games and this was a great one to have on the go.
I am quitting Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross (SDSGC). The application is already uninstalled from my devices and I will be blocking the primary netmarble website as well as SDSGC content creators on YouTube from visibility in the near future to avoid temptation of returning.
I will be leaving my account in purgatory as protest for a variety of issues. Nor will I be downloading the Japanese or Korean version of the game.
I am not writing this to offer solutions, having seen interviews with, and spoken to game developers in the past, the prevailing opinion is, “players are good at finding problems but bad at offering solutions. That is our job.” Given that, I will outline my issues.
Firstly, a subjective issue. The SSR rates are extremely low, while it is true that some people are luckier than others, my average pull rate for new units is a shade over 800 gems currently. This in itself is not a problem and I know I am an outlier. However, for me summoning is no longer fun, especially given the benefit of having duplicate units in PVP. Further, while I have the financial resources to chase units, why should I if the process is no longer fun for me? I can only imagine the hurt a player who does not have the financial freedom (especially during the current global climate) for luxury expenditure feels when they save for a month to only get nothing in return for their 800 gems. I understand it is a risk that gacha players take and is somewhat mitigated by the coin shop, but, frankly, I do not believe this is enough.
Secondly, the pace of banners on global. I can keep up. I have the resources to do so, but the consistent grind and changing PVP meta demands a device be on around twelve hours a day farming. Additionally, the pressure this places on people to summon negates the benefit of the amount of gems given – players frankly do not have enough time to save gems for the next banner.
Thirdly, the aftermath of the clean campaign. I thought the campaign was a good idea. Mitigate potential misinformation spread by datamines that may or may not set unrealistic demands for players. However, this requires that your official sources be consistent and error free. This has been laughably inadequate. (1) Incorrect text for the length of the Ban banner, (2) Using Blue Merlins silhouette in official advertising of the Green Merlin banner, (3) Stating that step 10 of the current Valenty banner would be one gem. These are the first three that spring to mind.
Finally, the lack of relevant communication – after the uproar of the existence of the Green Lilia banner, it was stated that player expectations were not met. The 100-day celebration was then detailed. The cause of the uproar was not addressed and seemed intentionally avoided. This sets a disturbing precedent for future issues. The glitches surrounding the current Green Valenty banner were the final straw for me, I feel I can no longer trust the Global team to competently manage the game.
The Japanese and Korean version of the game is a year old, and the global version is approximately 100 days old. The current state and management of Global is unacceptable to me. Should I make this many egregious errors in my work, I would no longer have a job.
Sincerely,
Mindcrime

2020.05.28 07:51 FilleDePublique Idle musings, things I find curious and some questions I’d like answered by the season two finale...

That’s all I’ve got :)
ETA: What if Forrest is a twin? He was wearing the same ring as the crazy twin out in bum-fuck nowhere and was slamming about being a prisoner. The crazy twin was also locked up, right? As part of the R&D study? What if Max is a twin? Maybe the hooded man was the father and Max is the twin they were conducting experiments on hence him being chained up in the flashbacks. I wonder if Grandma DeLuca was a twin.

2020.05.09 01:42 francesgumm Deep Sky - Who are they and what do they want?

I thought it would be fun and interesting to have a place to discuss and speculate about Deep Sky, who they are, what they want and what might happen with them. (Spoilers up to 2x08)
Deep Sky is an astronomy term. It means everything beyond our Solar System. As in, where aliens come from. But who is Deep Sky?
Here's what we definitely know about them.
(The quotes are taken from the transcripts provided by this site.)
They're "dangerous people" according to Charlie, and they're certainly not above abducting people and threatening to kill them. in 2x08, when talking to Max, Manes says they're "black ops group based out of Los Alamos" but then describes them as "paramilitary". In 2x04, Manes tells Jenna that Charlie is hiding from a "private security firm". So that's three different ways of describing the same group and each has different meanings and implications. Black Ops would mean that they're a government agency doing very covert and shady stuff but approved by somebody in government; paramilitary would suggest that they're not an official government agency, more like a private military/terrorist organisation. It's possible they're an unofficial. off the books government agency but they could be a private group either. Shades of Project Shepherd there.
(The website I copied the transcripts from says that Jesse describes them as a "private securities firm" which is a financial term to do with trading in equity and the likes. That puts a completely different spin on Deep Sky so I went back and listened to it and it does sound like he says private securities firm, though later Jenna says that he called it a "private security firm" which is more in line with how he described them. I find Trevor St. John mumbles a lot and can be hard to understand what he's saying sometimes, so I think Jenna is correct when she says private security firm.)
They're interested in Charlie Cameron and her research but couldn't touch her while she was in a Federal prison. "She knew, as long as she was in government custody, no one could get to her." so she apparently set up Jenna to turn her in so that she'd go to prison. (That smells of retro fitting but it's done well.) Manes says she's "She's in a hell of a lot more trouble outside of jail than she ever was inside." Deep Sky may have had some influence in her being released, but they didn't know when or they would have been outside the gate to swoop on her the second she stepped outside. So they're dangerous but not all-powerful.
What was Charlie working on?
"She was working on this genetic sequencing project that had the potential to save lives but also destroy them. There were some people out there who saw applications for her research that went beyond her intentions... She created a pathogen that could seek out and dismantle specific genetic sequences... A smart bomb that could be detonated in the middle of a crowded city, only harm its intended target." Charlie intended it for good. "Think about the innocent civilian lives saved while you take out leaders of terrorist organizations." But a weapon like that could also be used by people with the worst of intentions, such as genocide. "If her work fell into the wrong hands, it could quietly wipe out entire groups of people because they share certain genetic code, while their neighbors go about living their lives."
Manes believed that "he had a use for her pathogen, at one time". Obviously he intended to use it against aliens, in 1x12, Flint describes it as a "a wall against an impending alien invasion". Flint is a Special Forces Weapons Sergeant, and he's been brought in to adapt Charlie's pathogen into a bomb that could be deployed against aliens.
This is the Deep Sky Logo, as drawn by Jesse Manes.
https://preview.redd.it/l9zlxqpsmmx41.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5de13ec6235de9a26e9a91bcc424390646062844
We have seen that logo before, in 2x06. It's on the ring of Travis, the 'evil twin' that tries to kill Alex and Maria. The ring is pointedly shown and Alex even comments on it. At the time, most people thought it was a reference David Anders character on The Vampire Diaries, which it was but I've watched enough TV to know that when they bring your attention to something like that, it's for a reason and sure enough, in 2x08 we learn that the symbol on the ring is the symbol for Deep Sky.
https://preview.redd.it/dd8mqq8vmmx41.jpg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f7a844a890dc91877b469dc6715331687e7e0492
After shooting Travis, his brother Trevor advises Alex, Maria and Michael "If a paramilitary group ever asks you to take part in a study, you run the other way." (Good advice, I think we can all agree). We don't know what kind of study was involved, but in 2x07, Michael tells Maria that according to the Caulfied Files, "the government was interested in weaponizing alien abilities. They wanted to create super soldiers." So they ran experimental trials on humans and Maria's grandmother Patricia "was one of the first human subjects." The trials were a "total failure" and shut down in the 1970s after subjects started dying. Obviously they're weren't a "total failure" as both Mimi and Maria have inherited real psychic abilities. When they were 'officially' shut down, did some of the people involved go rogue, as Jesse Manes did with project Shepard, to carry on the work started in Caulfield now under the name Deep Sky?

Here's some speculation, some things I've noticed and some throwing things at a wall to see what sticks:
https://preview.redd.it/q5ejschuksz41.png?width=751&format=png&auto=webp&s=88e71cf95ec45db4bde239ca7ffcdd4067f2327d
In 2x10 "Cameron (guest star Riley Voelkel) encourages Liz (Jeanine Mason) to reach out to someone from her past after Auturo (guest star Carlos Compean) gets detained. I don't know why Liz would contact Diego in relation to Auturo being detained, but he's the only other person from her past that has been mentioned. So that was who I thought of when they mentioned someone from her past. If it was her mother, I think they would have said that as she's already appeared. It would be a way of introducing Diego before then revealing his has a Deep Sky connection. (There's no new guest stars mentioned in the synopsis apart from another of Alex's brothers and the cast list on IMDb doesn't offer any insight into who else it could be."
https://preview.redd.it/ebe5ni0zmmx41.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8a8155f22f7d85fb994d78005f68e7fe5600046a
Those are my thoughts and observations on Deep Sky. I'd love to hear what everyone else thinks, or if anybody has spotted something I haven't noticed.

2020.04.16 00:33 Eusoueueviceversa Favorite episode and why?

There are plenty of great episodes, specially in the first season, and I expect most people will say Pilot, 285 South, Blind Date, Sexual Healing, The End of The World, White Room, Destiny, Heart of Mine, Cry Your Name, but I still feel some of the more marginalized episodes will pop up here.
One of these marginalized is actually my favorite episode: S1 Ep 15 - Independence Day.
I think this is when Jason Katims and staff really peaked in terms of what they originally thought for the show: aliens as a metaphor for alienated teens.
I'll start with the photography. From the very first scene after the opening credits this Episode gets me. Michael and Max are talking outside the town beside a train track. The colors, the saturation, everything in this scene is great. It really puts us on this little town in the middle of nowhere America. I can think of a lazy Saturday afternoon, reminescent of my days growing up on a small town. The jeep scene outside the town, now with Isabel along is another example of great photography in this episode.
These scenes and episode are better when watching in letterbox. I remember when I didn't have a widescreen tv, the dvds episodes were all in letterbox. It was great, really theatrical. The whole episode is in a darker, somber saturation. It's actually the first episode on the first season to give us that feel. From that episode until Destiny, all episodes have this darker saturation; they are now on the action, dark driven point in the season. Compare them to let's say Heat Wave, Leaving Normal, The Balance, the Pilot, or even the episode prior, Blind Date. Those are much more brighter and have much more color.
Paul Shapiro also does a great job directing this episode. We can really feel Michael's emotions, all this rollercoaster that is his life. We can, for the first time, see what it's like for him when he crosses that trailer door. We get to see his "bedroom", his loneliness.
Then we have the contrast, the Evans family. Their traditions, their night board games. Philip and Diane (the late Mary Ellen Trainor) are actually real persons for the first time. By immersing on this scenario, Shapiro gives us the pods in their most mature up until now. We really feel their emotions, not only Michael's but also Max and Isabel's. She is the star in this episode, along with Michael.
We then get to the script. The story was, by no surprise, developed by Katims, who was in charge of most of the lighthearted, human episodes (he really wanted for Roswell to be something else), and written by Toni Graphia. A quote from Katims about Independence Day:

“I LOVE THE THEMES OF (MICHAEL) BEING AN ACTUAL ALIEN, AND HIM BEING AN ALIENATED TEEN.”

They did a terrific job. Leaving Normal was the first episode that made me cry, specially the final scene with Liz and Max's dialogue over Sarah Mclachlan's I Love You. Independence Day was the second time I really felt these characters were real, humans, even the hybrids. It was the third time I've cried; second one was when young Max healed the pigeon in The Toy House, another overlooked episode.
Independence Day's script put me on Michael's life. His real life. We had only heard about it, but we didn't actually see or feel it before. And then he goes to Maria. He has his heart wide open, he's all vulnerable. Maria hasn't seen him that way yet. No one ever did. Not even Max and Isabel. That raining scene must be the #1 favorite scene for plenty of fans.
We also get to see more of Hank. There's no filter in the script. Hank is what he is. An abusive father figure. We get to see situations, characters, and locations we only had heard about up until that point. Now they are all real, and it is heartbreaking. Michael arguing with Philip, he leaving the Evans' house by the window, and then Maria welcoming him into her bedroom by the window. The whole script is brilliant tv.
Then there's Max and Isabel's interactions with Valenti, but not as enemies, not looking over their shoulder, but viewing Valenti as what he actually was, the police force of the community, the one that people could rely on. Valenti shows a side of him that they haven't experienced, and Maria also sees it when Amy welcomes Valenti in their house. Amy discovering Michael the morning after and her kitchen monologue with Maria is another high point on the series.
What about the music? From the beautiful, gently Jars of Clay's Hand, to Collective Soul's Run, all the way to Radford's hunting Closer to Myself, and Bush's lament 40 Miles from the Sun, in one of the most sad yet beautiful scene's on the show, the production team did an amazing job. What about Joseph Williams and WG Snuffy Walden's score? I love, and I mean, I LOVE this particular one, from the Amy and Maria talk in the kitchen. It really sets the tone for the episode: http://www.roswelloracle.com/mp3_Andrew/Season1/S1E15%20Independence%20Day%20-%2003.%20Maria%20&%20Mom%20(Isabel%20Theme).mp3.mp3)
The final scenes, where Michael goes to Philip (it took him guts to do that after his interaction with him earlier), Michael and Isabel at his hearing with the judge (where Michael gets emancipated) are so emotional. Michael has a new chance, he's starting to become a new man, creating a new family. I just love this episode so much.
Some other highlights: Max and Liz's conversation about Michael's troubled life; the shapeshifter; Maria has never been more beautiful than in this episode; I really like Amy/Diane Farr, she was much missed on Season 3.
Here is Katims talking about the episode:

2020.02.20 21:54 ThrowDBGary Everything is perfect, exept me and my depression.

A bit of backstory. I'm 20 and female. My boyfriend is two months younger than me. We're together since about 2 1/2 years, we've moved into our first own apartment over a year ago (Germany). We're both students, but in different citys. I'm his first real relationship, he's my second one. I have depression due to organic problems and my past, but I have regular Therapy sessions.
Now... there's a lot to unpack. But I just don't know how to continue without destroying the best thing in my life.
So, at the beginning. We were 18, and oviously in the mood ALL the time. He was sad that I've had my first time with someone else, but we talked about it and it was fine after some time. We even tried sending each othes nudes, I've had more fun taking pictures than him, but he still enjoyed it too. We tested out fantasies and kinks we both have, and some just one of us has. It was all what you would want from the beginning of a relationship between two young people, everything was great.
And, more importantly, the mental connection. In my first relationship, I used to not say when ANYTHING bothered me, which finally led him to break up. I was 16, and the years after that totally broke me, but I learned my part of the lesson - so, I tried to be as honest as I could to anyone I considered for dating. We met on a Dating App, and I was actually totally done with it when we started chatting. I was anxious to meet him, and told him so. I left him hanging for months, but finally agreed to a date when I felt more comfortable texting him. We became friends - like, these kinds of friends you can just tell anything. And also those that have some kind of romantic tension between them. Like you know that you both consider meeting each other as a date, but you still aren't sure if they really mean it this way. Hell, he even told me he was scared that I just saw him as a friend. But now, we're still best friends. It's still the best relationship I could ever wish for. There is not a single person I feel 100% comfortable around, exept him. And he tells me he feels the same, all the time. We tell each other how much we love them every day, we share the same interests, we have the same humor, and most importantly, theres also space for our differences. I have more rebellious tendencies, he doesn't, at all. But we respect each other, and trust each other. It's just an all and all healthy relationship, and I never want to lose my best friend.
Now, the other part. The one where I hate myself more than anything, because I feel like only I bring these problems into this beautiful relationship.
So, since we moved, sex has gotten less and less. He has a part time job and is in a more study-based university than me, he is getting homesick a lot more than me. So, he gets stressed a lot, and often sits at his PC until deep into the night. It's fine, I understand that, nothing of that is something he should feel bad for... and that's why I hate that I make him feel bad about it.
The problem is, my sex drive didn't decrease like his did. It's pretty high, I wouldn't turn down any attempt he'd make, no matter where or when. Also, sex is something that I "need" to show love and feel fully loved, it's an important emotional thing for me. But, I don't have any self esteem. Like I said, I have depression, and it all kind of spiraled down with living together, stress and not being able to do what I need and want to do. I gained 30 kg in the process. I'm 1, 77 meters tall so It's not terribly bad, but I'm still slightly overweight now. And I feel so. Incredibly. Disgusting. Not because I think being overweight makes a person disgusting, but because I think I am.
We do have phases where we have pretty much regular sex. But that only goes on for a few days, and then it gets less and less. I've lost count over how many times it was totally okay, then spiraled down to a few times a month, me crying because I'm hurt, us talking, him feeling bad, it getting better, and then rinse and repeat. Right now, it's the crying part. He usually says he's too tired, or that he isn't in the mood, and as hurt as I am I know that I have to accept that, he's just himself and that's fine. He always makes sure to say that he still finds me attractive, and I think he means it. But usually, I make the move on him, and then mostly get rejected - or, occasionally, I don't. But in the past time, he barely made a move on me when I didn't ask. I want him to make flirty comments without me starting first, but it never happens. And he knows that, and I get that he often just isn't in the mood. But... for example, today. We actually had sex after a longer time, and stopped at some point cause he got too exhausted. Then we "finished" me together, but he was too exhausted to continue (his shoulder hurt from lying on it too long). And I was hurt by that. If he finds me attractive, he should not be wanting to stop now, right? It's like he does the bare minimum, like his actions don't add up with what he says. At least it feels like that to me.
Or on valenties day. We were out until past midnight, and he was very tired. But I tried to make a move, since it was a date night, but he said he wasn't in the mood. And i couldn't help but start crying, silently, so he doesn't notice. But of course he noticed, and... comforted me. He always does. And I'm there, crying, because I didn't get what I want. I told him that it's okay, that he shouldn't feel bad because I'm hurt, that it just is like that and we can't force it. It wasn't what i was thinking, but I knew it was the right thing to say. He is an angel, and he deserves so much more than me making him feel bad about something he can't change.
The worst thing is, as you can see, that most of the time I don't know If I'm rightfully hurt or not. I know I have a mental ilness, and that I can get too much into things. He is lovely to me, the sex is amazing when it happens, but i always seem to be hurt by these things that I interpret as a personal rejection. I seem to pick these out. Sometimes I even think "I'm in my twenties, I shouldn't be having problems like this already", which I hate more than anything, cause thats such an assholeish thing to think. And that's why I'm here, I don't know what to think anymore. Am I in the right to be hurt when he doesn't want me for a long time and doesn't SHOW me that he still finds me attractive? Or am I brushing over his problems and should deal with these doubts alone cause they're not real? I avoid talking to him about it, cause I know that I would make him feel bad. He just doesn't deserve this. I feel like all of this would be easier if I just weren't so depending on him. But I don't know how to change it. I don't know if I'm rightfully hurt or if these doubts are made up by my mental illness.
Thank you to everyone who read this. I wouldn't know how to make a TL;dr out of this. I really don't know what to think - or if I can trust what I'm thinking.

2020.01.17 17:40 serpentineeyelash A proposed scale for ranking feminist attitudes to male issues

Critics of feminism are often accused of treating feminism as a monolith. Whereas anti-feminists argue feminism deserves blame for the ways it's reinforced men's problems, pro-feminists argue feminism deserves credit for instances in which it's addressed various male issues. Other pro-feminist arguments include that misandrists are marginalized within the feminist movement, that feminism has recently moved away from its anti-male tendencies, and long lists of feminist activism on male issues.
What sometimes gets lost in this heated debate is that we're talking about a complex set of issues, so there are a wide range of possible positions on those issues. That means there is no binary dichotomy that sharply divides misandrists and egalitarians - rather, feminists have a spectrum of attitudes toward men. The problem is not so much that feminists never address male issues; it's more that there’s usually a feminist bias in which male issues they focus on and how they frame those issues. So in this post I propose a scale that might help us classify feminists by their various stances on men's issues.
The advantage of a scale is that it more precisely assigns credit and blame where it is due. It commends where there are good ideas, and rewards where there is observable progress, while still criticizing where there remains room for improvement. Many advocacy groups use scales to rank politicians on particular issues; my scale could be applied to feminist individuals, organizations, subreddits, factions, etc. Feminists and undecided observers should perceive this as a more reasonable stance than total anti-feminism.
(My scale does not cover right-wing attitudes toward men because they are based in a different ideology. But of course, I often point out how right-wing ideas harm men, see for example here and here and here.)
My proposed scale orders men's issues roughly based on how much feminists are disinclined to acknowledge and/or fight them. This is actually pretty easy to do because there is an underlying principle: it’s based on how much a particular male issue conflicts with women’s interests and/or the feminist ideological framework. So each point on my scale is defined by the most ideologically challenging male issue(s) that a particular feminist speaks out against.
Lower rankings on the scale reflect more misandrist approaches, while higher rankings reflect more compatibility with male advocacy. The scale currently has eleven points numbered 0-10, because 10 seems a nice round number:
0. No male issues. The open misandrists who don’t even pretend to care about men and may see men as biologically misogynist. They may advocate explicitly anti-male laws treating women as a protected class (like Catharine Mackinnon), or they may even advocate gendercide. Some extend their hatred to transgender people. They use rhetoric like “men are the enemy”, “the entire world is men’s studies”, and “men’s rights activists are the abusers’ lobby”. In mainstream society this camp are now on the backfoot outside Sweden, but online they are rapidly regrouping in new spaces like pinkpillfeminism. Meghan Murphy is an example of this category.
1. Male violence. The “men’s groups”, “men’s helplines”, and “teach men not to rape” classes that are all about men learning to stop being violent towards women. These feminists “help” men only in the sense of discouraging men from committing harshly punished crimes and maybe incidentally discouraging violence against other men (which in reality is the majority of male violence). Their main difference from level 0 is they think men can be reformed. Rosie Batty, the Duluth model, and the White Ribbon Campaign are in this category.
2. Toxic masculinity. This camp focuses on a subset of masculine norms which don’t particularly benefit women in modern society. These can include male-on-male violence and bullying, homophobia, the expectation that boys be strong and tough and like sports, etc. If pressed, they might condemn militarism and/or male genital mutilation. This camp demonizes masculinity as a code of male dominance, and shames men for normal sexual desires and behaviours (eg. porn viewing). They generally avoid mentioning the real underlying function of masculine norms, the monogamous protector-provider role – except when they promote it as a new improved “positive masculinity”. This is the camp of The Mask You Live In, the Gillette ad, and Michael Kimmel (before he got metooed).
3. Men’s mental health. This camp talks a good game on male suicide and men not being able to express their emotions, and maybe some really do care. But often the only reason they care is because they think it causes male violence, and the only cause they acknowledge is an internalized “toxic masculinity” which is implicitly blamed on men. There’s no consideration of any external discrimination affecting men’s mental health, nor of feminists telling men to shut up making men reluctant to open up. There may even be some feminist therapists treating their male clients as “privileged” (eg. in couples counselling). The American Psychological Association, and seemingly most of feminism’s real-world activism on men’s issues, fall into this category.
4. The male breadwinner role. Many liberal feminists are happy to oppose the male breadwinner role inasmuch as it helps career women climb the corporate ladder, so they’ll support paternity leave and other policies that make it easier for men to take on a childrearing role. But they’re missing in action when a father wants to continue being involved after divorce, or when a man wants to avoid being coerced into parenthood in the first place. They’ll also avoid mentioning the remaining points on this list, where male interests can come into conflict with female interests. An example of this category is Hillary adviser Anne-Marie Slaughter, whose limited concern for males is betrayed by her role in advocating more war.
5. Working-class male disposability. Unlike those feminists who are totally identity-obsessed, the more socialist-leaning feminists (and even some second-wave radfems due to their socialist background) acknowledge and seek to address some ways men are mistreated by society. Their focus varies but may include dangerous working conditions, stagnating wages, technological unemployment, homelessness, problems with the criminal justice system, war and conscription, and defending Julian Assange. This camp typically focuses on how both men and women are treated by plutocrats running corporations and states, a narrative which contains much truth. But they place a bit too much blame on elite men, ignoring how women benefit from the protection and resources acquired by male soldiers conquering other nations and male executives climbing the economic ladder. Most of the far left falls somewhere around here so it’s a broad category ranging from anti-idpol socialists, to misandrists like Caitlin Johnstone who believe more female power would create a gentler society.
6. Female-on-male violence. There is an increasing willingness to acknowledge male rape victims in particular, because it helps bolster the feminist narrative that rape is the worst possible crime. Many feminists now also acknowledge the broader issue of female-on-male intimate partner violence and criticize the Duluth model. But they might downplay its prevalance, and probably still defend women who exploit, manipulate, or unfairly blame their male partners without rising to the level of violence. They’ll avoid any discussion of what happens when an abusive woman accuses her male partner of abusing her, and may promote dubious statistics claiming to prove false rape accusations are rare. This is roughly about as far as MensLib goes most of the time, and was forbidden territory pre-2010s as evidenced by the treatment of Erin Pizzey.
7. Male-female relationship norms and disputes. Some of the more egalitarian-minded feminists will acknowledge at least some of the male grievances surrounding divorce courts, child custody, child support, and male reproductive rights. Some might even acknowledge the more day-to-day chivalric norms like whether men should be expected to make decisions, pay on dates, and be blamed when things go wrong. These issues are among the most important litmus tests for whether a woman truly opposes misandry, because they concern how the average woman treats men in her everyday relationships. Karen DeCrow was an example of this category and was marginalized by NOW for it.
8. Male sexual issues. Some of the most sex-positive feminists acknowledge the demonization of male sexuality, and men tending to receive a low level of sexual attention. They may even acknowledge the problem of many women treating their sexuality as a commodity in the style of femaledatingstrategy. Vaush and Jessica Valenti might be examples of feminists who somewhat lean into this category (EDIT: others have pointed out reasons why Valenti wouldn't score this well on the scale). Ironically, sex worker activists also tend to say positive things about male sexuality and sexual freedom, though obviously their business depends on the same commodity model.
9. Lack of due process for accused men. These rare voices are brave enough to call out the dodgy campus rape tribunals, the vague definitions of sexual harassment, and the extralegal social-media witch-hunts against men on the mere accusation of any sexual misconduct. This point is difficult to rank on the scale because a few mavericks jump over the middle points to call out this one (particularly women concerned about their sons or their own sexual prospects) – but I think it is sufficiently taboo within feminist circles to be placed at number 9. Katie Roiphe might be an example of this category.
10. Exposing feminist misandry. Only the occasional feminist is willing to go beyond “Patriarchy Hurts Men Too” by pointing out how the feminist narrative reinforces traditional negative stereotypes of men as more powerful, more malicious, and less vulnerable than women. This problem is acknowleged mainly by right-leaning feminists on the movement’s outer edge (eg. Christina Hoff-Sommers), who tend to hold other right-wing beliefs that are problematic toward men. Among left-wing feminists, some trans feminists like Ozy Frantz may come closest to acknowledging the problem, due to their clashes with TERFs and having experienced living as more than one gender. This category may also include many “coffee-shop” feminists who are out of touch with movement propaganda.
Of course, even an eleven-category scale cannot cover all feminists – some individuals will hold a mix of positions on the scale.
This scale does not consider factors such as rhetoric, tendency to silence critics, and the subjective judgement of who is taking an issue seriously and who is giving lip service. For example, the Lindy West article quoted by “Big Red” might even get a 9 on the scale due to sheer comprehensiveness, but arguably she only brought up the first 9 points to say she remains extremely opposed to point 10. West dogmatically defends the feminist ideological framework, denies the existence of misandry, claims all men hold power because of elite men, blames every male issue on “patriarchy”, claims feminism is already working on men’s issues, and even blames men for feminists hating men. So your mileage may vary on how much credit West deserves.
The scale is not necessarily intended to demonize every low-ranking feminist, as some individuals might be open-minded to learning new information that would move them up the scale. They may be well-intentioned but unaware of the limitations of their highly-censored echo chambers, and genuinely perplexed about why their approach to male issues fails to impress us. Moving people from the anti-male end to the pro-male end of the above scale should be a major goal of male advocacy. If my scale ever becomes popularized, maybe it could even be used to place pressure on feminists to up their game on men’s issues.
What do you think? Does my scale make sense? Does it seem like it could be useful? Have I left out anything important?

2019.10.16 16:50 CSpencer_Journalism Round 2 with NERO World

Since you dodged my first questions under the guise of not wanting to discuss “ongoing litigation processes”, though there have been claims you had no issues doing so in the past. I assume this would be because between now and then you have acquired your BAR to practice law, and now choose to not delve into detail, which I do agree being a wise decision. Allow me to ask some things not directly related to the litigation process.
At this point I have had ample opportunity to read through the forum posts for the conversation regarding the “symposium”. It would appear that a civil attempt to discuss the issues several chapter owners had involving the NERO rules as well as several other complaints for Joe were going to be presented. Several chapters owners in the conversation made it clear that attempting to steal NERO from Joe Valenti and requiring him to “publicly admit to being an idiot” would be unwise and unprofessional. These were in fact the very things thrown into Joe V’s face when he was reluctantly required to attend the so-called symposium? Am I too believe all of this nonsense stems from an inability to write a functioning rule system and Joe not allowing anyone to destroy the one he had already set in place, with a “fluid rule system?” A system that had proven fruitful over several decades.
You “left” NERO to form Heroic Interactive Theater correct? Then posted an array of several chapters across the united states, that over time ended up being dissolved to a minor few. Is this because they were all “NERO” chapters you planned to take with you to Heroic and didn’t have permission from those owners to use their names? How did all of those chapters suddenly vanish into thin air? Then you dissolve Heroic all together, which I can find no existence other than in the state of Delaware, and are now supposedly the owner of NERO World which you claim was your business in 2006? 2006? Like April 3rd, 2006, the date you signed your LICENSEE agreement with NERO International which you claim to have never heard of before now? What am I to believe? This whole situation stinks of injustice and appears to be the clad in the trappings of bitter NERO players, of a failed side LARP project, and an attempt to capitalize on the only successful entity they’ve ever been apart, namely as a Licensees. I’m just trying to understand the beauty behind this project that is NERO world, and am aware that my post will be met with hostility. I’m simply trying to get some answers here. What is the heavens is actually going on here? I would really like to see the other side of this coin.

2019.09.25 19:34 TKMLtheStar 10 Best Episodes Ranked (and 3 Worst)

Since this is my first reddit post, I thought it would be appropriate to make it about my all-time favorite show. Fun fact: I actually ranked all 61 episodes from my favorite to least favorite, but I doubt that a ranking of that size would fit in one post; therefore, these are my top 10 episodes ranked:
  1. Max to the Max (S1E20) - The mirror maze scene alone makes this episode a favorite. Nasedo's sinister - and questionable - methods were at the forefront with Liz's kidnapping, everyone's greatest fear since the pilot was realized with Max's capture, and the emotional scene between Liz and Michael when they realized what happened was heartbreaking.
  2. 285 South (S1E6) - The beginnings of the Michael/Maria relationship were both hilarious and heartwarming. The school project was a clever plot device to pair up different characters and made for some excellent development and interactions. Liz and Isabel finding common ground was a highlight. I, especially, liked how the writers continued to showcase Kyle as a sympathetic and complex character rather than simply a jealous ex out for vengeance; after he tracked down the gang, he declared that he did not really care what they were up to but instead just wanted to look out for Liz, which was a nice touch.
  3. The Departure (S2E21) - Each season finale was done very well, but the second season finale is my favorite. It was emotional and intense with the characters saying their goodbyes, and the plot was quick-moving and devastating as the gang learned the truth about Alex's death. Maz/Liz, Max/Tess, Michael/Maria, Max/Isabel, Isabel/Alex's ghost, Liz/Maria/Kyle...I could write pages about how amazing these interactions were in this episode. Michael opening up to Maria with the flashes was a beautiful scene and probably their best scene as a couple (additional points since it continued a plot thread that began in the middle of season one).
  4. How the Other Half Lives (S2E14) - This episode has a special place in my heart since it was the first episode of Roswell that I ever saw. I love how the gang all worked together to defeat the mutation from their ship. This episode was a great conclusion to a great story line, one which actually addressed the fact that they had human past lives just as much as they had alien past lives. Michael's arc with Laurie was important to the exploration of his human side. Kyle and Alex's conversation about being apart of something bigger due to their involvement with the aliens was a nice touch, and Alex's comment about being killed by aliens was an interesting bit of foreshadowing.
  5. The Convention (S1E13) - This episode contained a lot of humor - the eccentric convention goers, Max imagining Liz in slow-motion, the girls ranting to Alex about men and their "obsessions" - but there was a lot of seriousness as well. Liz showing sympathy for Jen was a great character moment for her. The confrontation between Hubble, Valenti, and Max was intense, the aliens learning more about the extent of Nasedo's previous actions and what it may have meant for their continued search for him was great, and Max's emotional declaration to Valenti after months of taking the heat in stride were excellent character moments for both. This episode was the beginning of Valenti's path towards the kids' side.
  6. A Roswell Christmas Carol (S2E10) - Not only was this episode an emotional and heartwarming Christmas installment, but it actually became important to a major plot line down the road. The callback to Max's time in the White Room was welcome, especially since it had previously been swept under the rug after the fact. Connecting Max's guilt-with-ghost plot and Maria's plot with Brody was clever and had an amazing, emotional payoff. The scene where Max healed the children with cancer was beautiful and - as mentioned before - led to a major plot in season 3. Liz's speech to Max about how sometimes there was reason for things that seem unfair was well done. The more amusing plots with Michael and Isabel balanced out the episode. Tess's plot with the Valenti's was a nice combination of funny and heartfelt.
  7. The End of the World (S2E5) - This episode delivered a crushing blow to Liz, Max, and the audience, but it was done very well. While this episode was mostly focused on the characters and their relationships, the Skins plot and the power of the granilith remained an important presence. Highlights included the dance between Liz and Future Max, Alex defending Maria against Michael, Future Max telling Liz about their wedding, and Kyle's hilarious delivery of the line "or did you rush over here because you sensed I might be experiencing some actual joy."
  8. Crazy (S1E17) - Topolsky returned. Tess first appeared. The gang learned about Agent Pierce and the threat he posed. The tension was prevalent in nearly every scene. The plot kicked into high gear, but we got some cringe-humor in the Max/Liz and Michael/Maria comparisons and double-date plot. Topolsky's capture at the end of the episode was intense and truly frightening.
  9. Blind Date (S1E14) - Emotional and heartwarming interactions between Max and Liz, hilarious scenes between the unlikely duo of Max and Kyle, and the heartbreaking scene between Isabel and Michael when Michael thinks that no one will come for him....this episode had it all. It was very character-focused - which was what this show did best - but it also connected the main plot threads surrounding Nasedo and pushed them forward in a big way.
  10. The White Room (S1E21) - A perfect episode of television and the best episode of this show in my opinion, this installment turned everything up to eleven. It provided the audience with the most information about the aliens' abilities, Nasedo, and the Special Unit's search thus far. It was the episode that brought everyone's worst fears to life, which was something that had been building since the pilot. The emotional performances of the actors for Max, Liz, Michael, and Isabel were phenomenal. The buildup of Pierce as a sinister villain payed off, Valenti came through when they needed him most, the dream-walking scenes were disturbing, and Tess was appropriately creepy. Liz being the person who ultimately decided to confide in Valenti was appropriate, and I wouldn't have had it any other way.
...And as a bonus, here are my 3 least favorite episode, although I don't really consider any episode of this show to be particularly bad:
  1. Max in the City (S2E9) - The scenes between Liz and Ava was a nice touch, but the climax of this plot fell a little flat for me. This episode was also at the height of Max's "I am king" attitude, which was my least favorite Max.
  2. Control (S3E5) - Season Three had a tendency to bring up a plot and let it fizzle out in the next episode, at least during the first half of the season. This was one such episode. Liz's main plot was that she was annoyed Max wouldn’t call her...bleh.
  3. Significant Others (S3E3) - The main plot centered around a relationship that the audience was barely familiar with. The interactions between Isabel and ghost Alex were the only redeeming elements of this episode.
Thoughts? What are everyone's favorite and least favorite episodes?

2019.05.29 13:52 vcardthrow1 An interesting read for all about male incels getting surgery / looksmaxxing

The comments are predictably stupid.
When you consider incels there's a lot to talk about - the total invisibility of incel/fa women (a byproduct of mainstream misogyny if there ever was one); looksism; cultural alienation; the power of a hyper digitalized age and what it does to this generation's mental health, changing everything from online dating to just existing, when you might be going to school with someone whose instagram reveals a model;
No one gives a fuck when its women obsessing over their looks. They laugh at them, at the self-loathing turned inward.
As someone (a guy...a normie and kind of a dick actually, of the Chapo Traphouse variety...someone who can go through life not thinking of what women go through and who pines for hipster Stacy himself, even though he's average looking) who posted this on his wall pointed out...it's bizarre women are socialized to get surgery for a lot of the same reasons incels do, but it's mocked and it's something they do in shame. Maybe in South Korea, less (but then your shame comes from not getting it to achieve an aesthetic). As if this trend of social pressure shaping the financial, romantic and cultural decisions of women being normal until men undertake them hasn't been a trope in media and society for...centuries, perhaps? Decades? Who can say? Every other crime and sorrow in history is ordinary when women bear the brunt of it; it's only a scandal when it falls on men.
But of course, the real scandal is that these frequently delusional men think surgery will vindicate their whole lives (I can sort of understand that of course - if I could take 3 years off to heal from various procedures and had 100k, I'd get a fuckload of surgery)...but it doesn't. That's the real tragedy, isn't it - growing up ugly, and losing those opportunities to find friends/mates when all that's expected of you is negotiating with your age cohort.
...But the real scandal, of course, is that there's an oft virulent ideology in men seeking salvation in implants and jaw surgeries.
I don't blame these guys for wanting surgery - fuck me, if I didn't want a nose job and weren't terrified of the pain/time to straighten my teeth, get the procedure, and heal, I would love bimax for my bulldog face. But I know I'd still have missed out on so much of life, having lived as an unnattractive person. (LOL, I'd still probably have disgusting acne too.)
I'm a little jealous of the woman that got paid to write this since any surgery-obsessed women here probably think about their jawlines and know who Eppley is.
The key to the "scandal" is that the guys interviewed are heading into surgery as mentally ill zealots who mix speaking of Eppley with talking about their all-encompassing hatred of women - colleagues, teenage Stacies. Who blathering about surgery being the key to getting blond slim 18 year olds to lie down in the street and fuck them. (Relevant that one of his patients killed herself after he botched her...I think of plastic surgeons, esp. high profile ones, as very frightening people, and they are always men.)
Jessica Valenti is quoted here as pointing out incels reveal less a loneliness problem than a misogyny problem, and honestly...she's not wrong. And it's fucked up because somehow the normie audience misses the legitimate revelations of incel culture and will blather stupid infuriating tropes about "confidence" and "being nice" and all this bullshit, while missing at its core, the scandal in the evolution is global misogyny, and incel culture being a meeting place for men who might have just held views cultivated by porn and violent forums. What comes first, the chicken or the egg? If a horny unhappy socially isolated teenager spends time with incels in the absence of female friendship or the self interrogation to question the nature of his anger (frequently entitled, in a lot of these killers - notice that?), is he stoked into a dangerous person, or is he simply finding a place among like-minded people to vent? Are we at the point it doesn't matter, when for every 50 ignorant kids, you get someone like Truth4Lies, who posted about "dominating"/humiliating a beautiful female underling to put her in her place for being hot? Who hate women while all but wanting to rape them blindly?
It's uncanny - that's old school fuckin' misogyny, y'know? Old school, mainstream misogyny of the variety Harvey Weinstein practices. He just doesn't use the lingo or think of it as a school of thought and had the power to exert his will over a lot of young women.
I've talked to mentally stable lonely teenage boys who feel at a loss in the West - unfortunate-looking Asian kids (I am in that category), the depressed, anxious - and then your run of the mill misogynists who have never been socialized to see women as people. Just to fear and hate them.
Her initial subject, Truth4Lie, is absolutely one of them.
